Our Day Services operate from two locations, Aachen Hall in King Cross and The Addy at Mixenden. Both buildings benefit from frequently serviced bus routes and are ideally positioned to cover a wide area of Calderdale.
Our day service provides opportunities for people to develop and maintain life skills through group experiences.
We offer a variety of fun, educational and recreational activities for up to 40 adults at any one time.
At Day Services we offer a range of different activities throughout the week. Our morning sessions begin at 10am until 12pm and the afternoon sessions start at 1pm until 3pm.
Within our centre-based service we provide a safe environment for individuals to learn new or enhance existing skills, promote independence, and help build confidence and self-esteem. Our flexibility supports people to choose to attend per session, for example half a day to attend a dance class or to attend for the full day if they wish. Our day services reduce the potential of isolation and encourages individuals to socialise with people who have the same interests whilst providing well-being support through a variety of activities.
In addition to our centre-based activities, we support individuals to access local community facilities, securing our links with local services and working to reduce dependency on paid support.
Preparation for Employment
Paid employment is one area that has great benefits for an individuals' self-esteem, acceptance within society and general mental well-being. This extremely popular programme supports individuals who are keen to explore paid employment opportunities and prepares them for the process. The course includes choosing a career path, where to search for vacancies, completing application forms, interview techniques and employer expectations.
We provide opportunities to get a taste of ‘real’ employment by working in our on-site café, delivering food locally and completing local gardening projects all under the same expectations as a paid employee.
Community Works was initially set up to challenge and overcome barriers that had arisen from the success of our Preparation for Employment course.
Currently, Community Works runs a shop that sells second-hand goods to the community, operates a café that provides a delivery service, runs a gardening service providing clean ups and grass cutting and an ironing service with collection and delivery services. These services have not only been instrumental in securing our place in the local community and raising the profile of people with additional support needs but have also allowed us to create meaningful paid employment for individuals. This has also involved meaningful skills such as handling money, dealing with customers and organising time to maintain employment. Our future aim is to ensure that anyone who attends our 12 months Preparation for Employment course is work ready on completion and either secures paid employment with an external employer or with Community Works, Mixenden.

Kirilead Whitehead - Ash Green, Illingworth & Kevin Pearce Children's Centre Manager
'It is fantastic to work in partnership with CSS and its is great to have their support within the community. Working together brings so many more opportunities for our local families.
The Children’s Centre and CSS have worked together for a number of years now on many projects such as local community events, supporting a parent and Toddler group, training opportunities and most recently the Holiday Activity Food programme.
The staff are amazing and will support us with any new ideas that we have and are happy to be involved too, contributing ideas and suggestions within the development process.
We would happily recommend working with CSS to any other services, we look forward to continuing our partnership and joint working with them in the future.'

“We have worked in partnership with CSS on different projects and have found them to be forward thinking, creative and organised in their approach to caring for people with lived experience of Learning Disability. We have looked at projects together to enable people to live a bigger life and enjoy good health and good strong relationships. They also play an active role in sharing experience and good practice with other care providers in Calderdale.”
